Boat Week Planning Begins

Realta Events Management have now formally been appointed and have started the planning process for the 2019 Shetland Boat Week event, which is set to return to the full week-long maritime experience next August.

Organisers are keen to hear from anyone who has a traditional Shetland model boat they would like to display at Hay’s Dock during the event. In addition to a range of general interest boats, there is a particular appeal for boats built by Jimmy Smith, and boats which have been self-restored by their owners in the last 10 years. A selection of before and after photos would be displayed alongside the restored boats.

Shetland Amenity Trust have engaged Emma Miller of Realta Events Management to co-ordinate the event alongside Trust staff and the volunteers who have contributed significantly to the success of previous events.

In addition to the usual sailing and rowing experiences, there are plans to increase the shoreside activities and range of lectures and exhibitions, as well as the ‘on-the-water’ opportunities. In that respect, organisers are issuing an additional appeal to any group, club or maritime related business who would like to be involved to get in touch.

The event is scheduled to run from Monday 5th to Sunday 11th August, with extended dates for the outdoor boat display on Hay’s Dock.

Head of Engagement at Shetland Amenity Trust, Sandy Middleton, said “I’m delighted that we’re able to confirm the return to a full Shetland Boat Week and that we have the support and dedication of those who have been instrumental to the success of previous events. The Trust is committed to Shetland’s maritime heritage and enabling access to this for people of all ages and abilities.”

Anyone who would like to include an event in the programme, volunteer during the week, or offer a boat for display should get in touch with Emma Miller at emma@realtaevents.co.uk or call 07753 806095.
